Early Detection Saves Lives
Early Detection saves Lives... Almost one million Americans die each year of heart disease; another 550,000 will die from cancer. Tragic. But the real tragedy is that most of these deaths could have been prevented with early detection.

Heart disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Over 239,000 Americans will die this year of a heart attack before they can reach a hospital. For many, the first sign of a heart problem is death.

Since 1984, the number of cardiovascular disease deaths for women has exceeded those for men. Thirty-eight percent of women who have a heart attack die within a year, as compared with 25 percent of men.

In many cases, the early stages of heart disease can be easily detected and treated. One in five Americans has high blood pressure, a key risk factor for heart disease. One in two has elevated cholesterol, another key risk factor.

Cancer
The American Cancer Society predicts that 556,700 Americans will die of cancer in 2003 -- more than 1,500 people every day. Significant strides have been made in treatment, but the most important determinant of survival is detection at the earliest stages. The following table underscores the importance of early detection -- finding the cancer before it spreads -- in the fight against cancer.

Colonoscopy
Recognizing that colonoscopy (the direct visualization of the colon) is the gold standard for polyp and colon cancer detection, EHE offers the procedure as part of its signature exam, Platinum. Colonoscopy is performed under conscious sedation by a board-certified gastroenterologist. EHE recommends colonoscopy to all individuals aged 40 and above, as well as to those with a family history of colon cancer, polyps, rectal bleeding, or as otherwise determined by their EHE examining physician.

An EHE Platinum examination focuses on the early detection of heart disease and cancer&the leading causes of death in the United States.
