Is Fitness Simply Based on Genetics?

While the path to physical fitness is straightforward (i.e., dieting and exercise), this path starts to meander wildly when people attempt to actually follow it--lengthening the time it takes to reach the finish line, if ever. The question, of course, becomes "why?" Why are people hard-pressed to achieve fitness when every voice out there is saying that it's good? An individual’s genetic makeup has a lot to do with how they live their life: It determines if they will be predisposed to certain behaviors and diseases, and if they will inherit certain traits. Genes are so influential to animals, plants, and microorganisms (which all pass along their genes to their offspring) that the manipulation of them has become an area of great study, and great concern because the consequences of passing on engineered genes have unknown consequences so far.
