Poor oral and dental hygiene can lead to a variety of ailments including tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, and periodontal (gum) disease. According to recent research, however, there may also be a connection between an individual’s oral health and his or her overall health. Poor oral and dental health may increase an individual’s risk of developing other serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. The practice of good oral hygiene may therefore be more than just an important component of an individual’s oral and dental health; it may also be a key element of his or her overall preventive health regimen.
