Don’t Fear Medical Screenings

As the saying goes, “knowledge is power.” When it comes to personal health, however, many prefer another adage: “ignorance is bliss.” Visiting the doctor for a medical exam and learning one’s overall health status may stir up thoughts of mortality and guilt for not taking better care of our bodies, especially as we age. This avoidance mindset will not help us make pro-active decisions about our health.

 

“Avoiding medical tests because of anxiety can cause more health problems, such as fatigue, muscle tension, restlessness, and difficulty sleeping, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America,” writes John Fortunbury in The Atlantic. “Even if the worry is only an occasional one, [anxiety] weakens the immune system.”

Ebola Outbreak: Travel Health Precaution

The Ebola virus has been front page news recently for good reason: on July 31st the CDC issued a level 3 alert advising against non-essential travel to the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. CDC workers are being dispatched to this region in order to help contain the growing epidemic.
